This book is a snapshot of a much larger community and scene. It started when I asked my friends, classmates, and neighbors, “What’s your favorite band right now?” This led me to Weathergirl, Le Bang, The Tarrys, Wince, and Gun. I documented these bands at rehearsals, performances, writing sessions, and finally, in one large portrait shoot—our very own Picture Day.

The result is “Welcome To The Class of 2024,” a music yearbook that encapsulates a little pocket of the NYC music scene where people come to find their place. This book will connect you with this diverse community of youths, the coolest people you’ll ever meet (seriously).

People often say, “NYC is dead.” These people are boring. New York City is very much alive. This yearbook will show you how alive.

Weathergirl

Weathergirl is an NYC-based band that began performing in 2022. Initially setting out to be a math-rock / midwest emo band, they realized their “genre is an amalgamation of whatever sounds strike our fancy as we write,” according to vocalist and rhythm guitarist Kyra Horario.

Their sound is light and harmonic, with a big build to a heavier bridge. The band has a Modest Mouseian sound with their echoey sound yet also hard and thrashy vocals. Weathergirl’s approach to music is deeply communal, whether in their writing style or the fact that they have three lead vocalists in a band of four people. Horario is vocals and rhythm guitar, Nasan Roberson is vocals and lead guitar, Cleo Harris is vocals and bass guitar, and Leo Menninger is on drums.

Le Bang

Le Bang is a NYC based band consisting only of vocals, bass lines and drums. Lola Lancon (also known as “Bang”) is lead vocalist, Billy Hay (also known as “Bugz”) is on bass guitar, and Stavros Lari (also known as “Prank”) is on drums.

Sonically, Le Bang is reminiscent of “Sex Bob Omb” from Scott Pilgrim VS the World, Le Tigre, and D.C-based band Sneaks, but with a French twist, calling back to Lancon’s  Parisian roots.

The Tarrys

The Tarrys originated in Danbury, Connecticut, in 2020. They call their sound “BIPOC punk hardcore music,” rooted in the 80s hardcore codes of chanty lyrics and speedy chords shattered by a bridge.

The Tarrys play gigs all over the Tri-State area. Alongside Sa’s grave scream, lead guitarist/vocalist Brandon Cruz chants rapidly in a low tone. Ivan Batista is on bass guitar, and Ke’Shown Brown plays drums.

Wince

Hailing from South Brooklyn, Wince’s members are David Hernandez on lead vocals and lead guitar/ rhythm guitar, Kyra Horario on bass guitar, Ryan Palmer on Drums, and Wil Ren on lead and rhythm guitar.

Although Wince’s sound can depend on the song, they are true to being a noise band, a mixture of Slowdive, Weezer-esque guitar riffs, Deftones, and Elliot Smith. Their addictive song “Spring Rounds” is a great example. t starts with a cacophony of noise that morphs into a sweet guitar lick ‘til the drums come in behind. Soft vocals intertwine with thrashing guitar and the continued original riff. It’s dreamy and grungy all at once.

Gun

Gun is a NYC-based band consisting of Stavros Lari on vocals and guitar, Aadil Mufti on guitar, Maria Galebach on bass, and Billy Hay on drums. Their music “is the crossroads between nu-metal, digital hardcore, and emo that every 2000s baby is looking for,” said Lari.

Taking influences from Deftones, The Prodigy, Limp Bizkit, Atari Teenage Riot, and KFC Murder Chicks, Gun adds their own personal spice to everything, making it uniquely theirs by melding all these genres together. Some songs lean more towards pop-punk, while others have touches of electronic. All have the hypnotic thrashing guitars and heavy-ass drum fills.
